Future ready system, future ready people: Aligning the VET workforce with tomorrow’s skills (132196)

Australia’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) system is under increasing pressure to keep pace with rapid technological change, shifting job roles and evolving skill demands. BuildSkills Australia’s forthcoming VET Future Readiness Review shows that while the system excels at delivering foundational skills, it struggles to adapt quickly to emerging needs. Training Packages evolve too slowly. As a result, learners and employers are turning to short courses and informal training, which can be updated quickly in response to changes such as new technology. The Review also found that Training Packages are not adequately meeting employers’ needs for enabling skills, including digital literacy, collaboration and adaptability.

The system cannot be transformed without the people who deliver it. BuildSkills forthcoming VET Workforce Study highlights that attracting and sustaining a capable VET workforce across the built environment training ecosystem is now a systemic constraint. The Certificate IV TAE remains a barrier to entry, specialist roles lack clear pathways, and compliance burdens erode teaching time and morale.

This presentation connects the challenges of system agility and workforce renewal to show how TAFE can anchor a “future-ready” national training system. It will outline practical reforms to strengthen workforce capability and support modular and lifelong learning.

Key Takeaways for the Audience

  1. System agility and workforce renewal are inseparable.
  2. TAFE is uniquely placed to bridge formal and informal learning.
  3. Practical reforms—modular delivery, shared resources, CPD—can start now.
  4. Collaboration, not competition, will future-proof the national skills system.
