TAFE Queensland’s (TQ) Defence Solutions team showcases the Power of TAFE through strategic partnerships with Defence industries and tailored support for Australian Defence Force (ADF) veterans transitioning to civilian careers. Central to this work is the Defence to Civilian Success Training Program (DCSTP), delivered in partnership with the Queensland Government’s Office of Veterans. This program provided funding to 383 veterans, while more than 3,500 veterans and family members have accessed training and financial assistance through the TQ Defence Solutions team. TAFE Queensland proudly recognises the sacrifices made by our Australian defence force personnel and their families. We are committed to supporting them and assisting them to find purpose, upskill, and meaningful transitional pathways when leaving the ADF.
The team is a crucial component in translating military skills into civilian competencies, guiding veterans through training options, one-on-one support, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), funding pathways, and career planning. A standout success is the ADF-specific virtual Diploma of Project Management, facilitated by the TQ Business Innovation and Commercial unit at TAFE Queensland Brisbane. Delivered via evening sessions to suit serving and transitioning members, more than 185 participants have already completed the program. Employers report that ADF graduates bring practical, job-ready skills that often exceed those of direct-entry university graduates.
This work complements broader initiatives such as the ADF Transition for Employment Program, the Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Program and a variety of other ADF support organisations, ensuring a coordinated approach to veteran training and employment.
This presentation will share lessons on customising training for niche cohorts, leveraging veteran-led support, aligning funding, and delivering flexible qualifications. It demonstrates how TAFE transforms lives, strengthens Australia’s workforce, and honours the service and sacrifice of our veterans and their families.
